Sanderson Weatherall was formed on the merger of Weatherall Green & Smith (Leeds & Manchester
offices) with Sanderson Townend & Gilbert (Newcastle, Teesside & London
offices) in 2003.
Weatherall Green & Smith
The first recorded presence of Weatherall Green and Smith in Leeds dates back to 1833 when Thomas Hardwick set
up his own business, becoming Hardwick, Best & Young in 1867 and Bramham &
Gale in 1870. At a similar time, Joshua Bramham set up a business in rent collecting
in 1843, which eventually developed into Hollis and Webb in 1919.
After the war, the two firms became active in commercial property and merged
to form Hollis Webb & Gale in 1969, and later Weatherall Hollis and Gale,
eventually becoming Weatherall Green & Smith in the early 1990’s. Weatherall's remained the largest and most prominent firm of chartered surveyors in Leeds, becoming
larger still when, at first it acquired the business of Singleton's plant and machinery specialists of Manchester, swiftly followed by the merger
in 2003 with...
Sanderson Townend & Gilbert
Establishing his business in 1858, William Sanderson began trading as a builder,
slate merchant, joiner & cabinet maker from 17 Prudhoe Street and Lambton
Place, before soon changing specialism to ‘managing estates and property placed
in his charge’.
By 1869, William had agreed a partnership with his son Thomas Barkas and, now
trading from Percy Street, the firm was known as Thos. Sanderson & Company,
becoming Thomas B. Sanderson & Son in 1893. Described by the monthly property
register as ‘estates and property agent, surveyors & valuers’, the business
moved to 3/5 Mosley Street in 1894.
It was here that ‘Sandersons’ would remain for another 81 years when in 1973
– and now known as Sanderson Townend & Gilbert (STG) following the arrival
of partners William Townend in 1923 and Cecil Gilbert in 1937 – the firm moved
to 2 Collingwood Street. On September 13th 1999, the business made its final move to 22 – 24 Grey Street, where it remains
to this day.
